FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Florida Panthers became Stanley Cup champions for the second straight year Tuesday night after defeating the Edmonton Oilers 5-1, and their championship parade is now scheduled for this weekend.
The parade will be held at noon Sunday and travel down A1A in Fort Lauderdale beach.
6 p.m. report:
The parade route will start at A1A and Riomar Street. The route will extend down A1A with the parade culminating at Southeast Fifth Street, with a rally on stage at Fort Lauderdale Beach Park across from Hotel Maren.
“We’ll kick off the parade just south of the Bonnet House, make our way all the way down A1A and go south of Las Olas, where the stage is going to be on the sand and it’ll be pretty much the same like that,” Fort Lauderdale Commissioner Steven Glassman said. “There will be ways for people to take the water taxi to the beach, there will be ways for people to take the shuttle to the beach. All of that information will be coming out in the next few days.”
Noon report:
At least 200,000 people gathered to watch last year’s parade, despite heavy rainfall.
“Hopefully no rain, and we’ll see people smiling and everyone will be cheering, stay hydrated and bring water,” said Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis. “Everyone will have a good time.”
“We want people to wear hats, wear coverings and bring water with them making sure everyone is safe from the elements because we know it’ll be intense heat like it is right now,” he added.
“Just to see them in person celebrating their hard-earned work is fantastic,” said Panthers fan David Manoharan.
Crews were seen working on the beach for hours Wednesday, building the stage for the Stanley Cup champs.
City officials say the celebratory parade has been in the works for weeks.
“We were planning weeks ago. Actually, we had conversations weeks ago just in case, because you can’t pull this thing off in just amatter of one or two minutes,” said Glassman.
More information on parking and additional details will be released in the coming days, and fans should stay tuned to FloridaPanthers.com/PlayoffCentral and official Panthers social media channels.
The Panthers repeated as Stanley Cup champions by beating the Oilers 5-1 in Game 6 of the final on Tuesday night, becoming the NHL’s first back-to-back winners since Tampa Bay in 2020 and ’21 and the third team to do it this century.
Sam Reinhart scored four goals, becoming just the sixth player in league history and the first since Maurice Richard in 1957 to get that many in a game in the final. His third to complete the hat trick sent rats, along with hats, flying onto the ice. Matthew Tkachuk, one of the faces of the franchise, fittingly scored the Cup clincher.
More rats were part of the victory celeb
ration when the clock hit zeroes. Panthers players mobbed in the corner, while the Oilers watched in dismay.
“We’ve got to be a dynasty now,” Tkachuk said. “Three years in a row -- finals, two championships. This is a special group.”
